Joining God’s Work in the World: Sarah, TWR summer intern

By Malise Terrell
Americas, Global, Internship (2-3 mo.), Marketing, USA
09 June 2023
[estimated reading time: 3 minutes]

Sarah Mummert, a rising junior at Cedarville University in Ohio, is majoring in professional writing and information design. This summer, the Hanover, Pennsylvania, native joined TWR’s Marketing and Communications department in Cary, North Carolina, as a journalism intern.

TWR got Sarah’s attention when she attended Cedarville University’s career fair her freshman year. They were hiring in her field of study. The following year, TWR’s Mobilization team connected with her again, which led Sarah to her internship this summer.

Sarah loves words, grammar and punctuation. That is ideal since she is writing, editing, proofreading and researching this summer. She wrote and published a poignant TWR global social media post in her first week. She shared that she loves knowing that she can use her skills to contribute to the team. Sarah also eagerly used her skills to creatively name this series of profiles about the summer interns.

Just two weeks into her internship, Sarah shared, “I’m most looking forward to the learning and growing I’m going to do this summer. I’ve already started seeing some common themes in things that God has been revealing to me and areas he’s been growing me.” She has discovered, “I’m more dependent on God than I thought.”

Sarah and other interns assist the maintenance team at our U.S. office with their workWhen she was asked what her biggest challenge this summer might be, Sarah candidly revealed she has been battling fatigue and migraines during the work week. Long days in the office are draining in a different way than student life. Thankfully, she has been asking God for wisdom as she figures it out. Nowadays, we see her carrying a water bottle around the office to stay hydrated or sharing the plethora of snacks her grandmother sent.

One of Sarah’s favorite things about TWR is the global mission. Still surprised at learning the great need for writers and mass communications staff in missions, she is thrilled to be working for a media missions ministry like TWR that has a global radio and digital media reach in spreading the gospel.

God used a Bible class to draw her to sharing her faith. Admittedly, it is an area of growth for her. This attitude led Sarah to focus on missions during spring break in 2022. She served in London with Agape Europe. Her team of 18 spent time on university campuses in the city sharing the gospel. “My interest in and the undeniable draw toward this trip were unmistakably from the Lord.”

This summer here at TWR, Sarah shares her excitement about her role as a writer, where she’ll be “using my skills for God’s glory and the furtherance of the gospel, even if I don’t end up in cross-cultural, on-the-field missions.” We can all learn from her spirit: “I just keep stepping through open doors, asking him to guide me into the next thing. And I’ll keep doing the next thing.”

Sarah and her familyHer faith is remarkable as she believes the most difficult thing about being away from home this summer will be “feelings of loneliness even while being surrounded by people. There’s also knowing all the things I won’t get to be there for,” like her dad’s 50th birthday party, sitting by their pool reading, taking long walks with her mom or watching movies with her siblings. The tropical North Carolina climate is something she is getting used to, especially after sauntering into the kitchen and finding a blue-tailed skink on the floor by the dishwasher!

During her time in the area, Sarah looks forward to enjoying different foods, including North Carolina barbecue. And aside from her writing and ministry at TWR, she hopes to make it through a stack of books that have been on her reading list for quite some time.
