Just before his betrayal and arrest, as Jesus was praying for his disciples, He said to His Father in Heaven, "Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth." (John 17:17, NKJV). I like what the Africa Bible Commentary says about this passage--Jesus "stresses that this sanctification will be brought about by the truth, that is, by their increasing knowledge and understanding of God's word. The disciples would need such sanctification because they would be living in a world that did not value it but was opposed to God's will."1 We certainly live in a world that does not value nor even recognize God's truth. But just because many scientists, college professors, journalists, and politicians don't believe in the truth of says of the Bible, "This book is authoritative. Our faith doesn't hang on air...our faith hangs on the authoritative framework of the Word of God."
