Listeners are at the heart of everything we do, and we simply can’t get enough of their feedback – who they are, what kind of impact TWR programming is having on them, how God is working in their lives. For 2014 we have assembled 60 compelling, representative responses into a special booklet and will feature one response online each week in celebration of our 60th anniversary.

Language: Portuguese

Country: Mozambique

For him, a TWR radio broadcast was like the voice crying in the wilderness.

Mark woke up one day ready to go about his business – robbery.  Little did he know the tide was about to turn on his life.

Until recently, Mark (not his real name) had been adrift in a sea of meaninglessness, living as an armed gangster after his life had been deeply scarred during years in the Mozambique military. Later the same day, Mark would steal a radio, and it would be the instrument God used to bring Mark into the Kingdom.

Mozambique is one of the world’s poorest countries, the majority of its population living below the poverty line.  Less than one-third of the people have an established, significant church, according to the Joshua Project research group. The country struggles mightily as a result of a history of colonialism, unstable economics and intense guerrilla warfare.

Is there hope for a land beset with so many problems? Mark’s story suggests that there is indeed. For him, a TWR radio broadcast was like the voice crying in the wilderness.

“When I turned on [the radio], I was looking for any radio station,” Mark said. “It turned on to the TWR transmission. I listened to programs in different languages. One program called me to pay attention.  It was the program Weherya MwaYesu [in English, Words of Hope]. Pastor Mutilima was talking about crime and all kinds of sins.  The pastor said that those who live in sin are enemies of Jesus and they will be judged on the last coming of Jesus.”

This got Mark thinking about the second coming of Jesus.

“I read the passage in Revelation about murderers, the immoral, idolaters and all liars – ‘their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur.  This is the second death,’” Mark said, quoting Revelation 21:8.

And Mark didn’t just think about it.  He placed his faith in Jesus and immediately set out to do the work of evangelism, passing the message along to three compatriots.  The whole gang took Jesus into their lives, and the members are “testifying about his second coming to others."

Perhaps the dramatic conversion of Mark and his friends will serve as a wake-up call for Mozambique.
