Feb. 13, 2015, UNESCO has declared a global celebration of radio, or #WorldRadioDay. The purpose of the campaign is to “celebrate the importance of radio in our lives, but to ensure it lives up to its huge potential in the future” (UNESCO, 2015).
However, in TWR, every day is a radio day. Radio is an integral part of TWR’s identity. For over 60 years, TWR has utilized this medium to speak the truth of the gospel. TWR remains relevant in today’s society not only for using radio but also for enabling younger generations to communicate hope to the world.
Scott Hollinger, a Media Content Team Leader for TWR, wrote this about his experiences with young people in radio production:
During July 2014, I traveled to Nairobi to work with the TWR Kenya team, the American Bible Society and the Kenya Bible Society on a series of programs dealing with healing the wounds of trauma caused by war, terrorism and natural disasters. The TWR Kenya team of producers and voice talent that I worked with are mostly in their early 20s. This team brings energy and enthusiasm to the program production process. … These young producers are crucial to the process as they are “digital natives” and think beyond just radio. … They are also able to write drama that reaches their own group as well as those in the older age groups. They can also be more willing to take risks in the production process than a more “seasoned” producer might.
A good example is the “Lament” song they wrote and produced (listen to the sound bite below). The “Lament” song is based on Lamentations 5:1-22. I can’t imagine doing something like this. But they took on the challenge and did a great job with the song (a soundclip of the song is available at the bottom of the page).
The other element I enjoyed is the teamwork that occurred during my time with the team in Kenya. I really appreciated how willing they were to work with each other and people from outside their country. They are a fun group, and I hope to have the opportunity to work with them again at some point.
TWR really needs this generation to be involved. They are vital to our future as a ministry, but they are also vital to helping TWR understand how to reach their generation and the generation coming up behind them.
