Longtime TWR missionary and strategic global initiatives representative Bill Mial shares his insight about leadership development in this engaging Q &A.
Why is leadership development an important initiative within TWR’s programming priorities?
In the broadest context of ministry, leadership is the focal point to not only the direction but also the nature and essence of a particular ministry. TWR’s Global Strategic Plan (GSP), of which leadership development is a significant part, stemmed from a global survey which indicated the need for leadership mentoring, educating and training. In effect, a leader can either “make or break” a ministry, therefore we see it as serious calling to assist in this area.
You spent the past two years in Africa. What type of leadership development projects have you been involved with?
Foundational to effective leadership in Africa is a clear understanding of those areas of one’s worldview which might be contradictory to the biblical worldview. We have found that even within the Church in Africa, the need exists to deal with these issues. Therefore, we are producing and airing a 52-program mini-drama series in the major languages of Africa, discussing these matters around a family devotional context.
We are also in partnership with MentorLink International working on a series of radio programs geared to the oral cultures and communities of Africa, teaching them the mentoring process patterned after the servant leadership model demonstrated by our Lord Jesus Christ.
What is the biggest challenge when it comes to training leaders in other countries?
Perhaps the high level of respect given to the pastor or Christian leader which effectively places them on a pedestal, not necessarily of their making, becomes an obstacle not easily removed. Also, finding effective ways of interacting with these extremely busy individuals is also a challenge. I believe that TWR is uniquely positioned to find and address the leader in an informal setting.
What is the effect that leadership development has?
TWR is addressing this challenge among the young future leaders in order to change the overall understanding of the role of servant leadership. In many ways, it is a lifestyle issue that is not easily changed.
How can people pray for TWR’s ongoing leadership development strategy?
Many organizations are involved in leadership training all over the world. TWR is looking for the right partners to come alongside us and minister in this regard. Training is a very broad subject with varied needs, so please pray for wisdom to know how TWR can best contribute to changing the global environment within the Church.
