Tips for engaging with Turks
[Estimated reading time: 2 minutes]
Despite the close link to the historical narrative of Christianity, less than one percent of Turks identify as Christian. We must pray against the spiritual strongholds that keep Turks from hearing and responding to the message of Jesus.
TWR’s Muslim ministry coordinator for Europe wrote:
“It is very important to form relationships with [Turkish] people for them to feel safe enough to open up. The process of a Turk becoming Christian can often be a lengthy one, and unfortunately, many will give up after some years due to the pressure they risk being put under, especially from family and friends. That said, I still believe many can be reached ‘indirectly’ through media, for instance, to at least spark curiosity. Then, relationships can be formed through follow-up, initially often on social media, and eventually, some are ready to meet in person.”
1. Be culturally sensitive
Understand the historical and religious context and avoid language which may be seen as offensive and cause distrust.
2. Build authentic relationships
Don’t go into the evangelism process thinking it will be fast and easy. Take time to build relationships that create a platform for later, bringing up your faith and why you believe in Christ.
3. Share your personal testimony in a way that is bold yet non-confrontational
When you talk about faith in God, do so by sharing personal stories from your life, being open about how it has changed you. Don’t shy away from following the Spirit when God is telling you to speak.
This article is part of a bigger series called Reach the Last. We’re calling attention to unreached people groups in the world – those who lack enough Christ followers and resources to evangelize their own people. We’re showing how God is using TWR’s media ministry as one of his tools to call the last people to himself.
