Project Hannah, which takes its name from the biblical woman, Hannah (1 Sam. 1:1-28), was founded in 1997 by Awareness Advocate Marli Spieker. Marli and her husband, Edmund, were Trans World Radio missionaries in Asia when God impressed upon her the many women who are trapped in spiritual, cultural, and physical bondage.

Fruit of the Harvest

The gardener plants the last of the seeds and gazes across her field, imagining the fruit it will bear when harvest comes. And as Project Hannah approaches its fifth anniversary this November, we take time to reflect on and rejoice in God's harvest over the past several years through this ministry.

First came a year of prayer and planning. Then, once the English Women of Hope (WoH) was produced and on the air in October 1998, several translations were quickly started to reach a broader audience. Soon, Project Hannah's outreach was flourishing throughout Southeast Asia, and many women's lives were being transformed by the message of hope in Jesus Christ.

One Vietnamese woman, Tuyet, was in the last stages of cancer and had to stay in the hospital for six months. Her only resource for comfort and encouragement during this difficult time was Women of Hope on cassette. Sadly, Tuyet died a few months ago. But her sister Yen said that she also likes to listen to WoH on tape, and the programs have even changed her husband's behavior. She said he used to beat her after he drank, but after listening to the tapes, he cares and loves her more than before.

A woman listener in Cambodia wrote: "Thanks so much for your wonderful program that gives such sound advice. I have had a health problem that has been a hindrance in my life for more than a year. I haven't found relief from these bad headaches even with medication. I had to stop my education and feel I am a burden to my parents. I was so depressed and brooded about my problems constantly until I started listening to your program. You have helped me change my perspective. I've accepted Christ as Savior, so now I turn to Him when I feel discouraged. I'd like to go to church, but I cannot even get up and walk around without getting dizzy and passing out. Please pray for me."

Today, Project Hannah's ministry extends beyond Southeast Asia. In October 2000, WoH began airing throughout Latin America in Spanish. This version is broadcast over more than 90 local stations in the region, including 31 stations across Bolivia alone!

The Director of Radio Trans Mundial-Bolivia told PH: "We just released WoH in Spanish on a local secular community station in eastern Bolivia. Shortly after beginning the broadcasts, the local priest visited the station and asked for information about the program. He graciously informed the station manager that the program was the best one for women he had ever heard, and they must continue broadcasting it. Shortly after, the town civic committee even passed a resolution to have Women of Hope broadcast regularly. They made it a requirement for the local station!"

Praise the Lord that the harvest will continue broadening throughout the coming months...and beyond.
