Announcing the Christ of Christmas

In his December 15, 2010 blog, Ligonier Ministries Founder R.C. Sproul writes, “…for one brief season the secular world broadcasts the message of Christ over every radio station and television channel in the land. Never does the church get as much free air time as during the Christmas season.”

Of course, the message of Christ’s birth communicated primarily through Christmas melodies and hymns is the primary content of “free” secular radio and TV air time during the Christmas season.  One popular, local, FM station began airing Christmas music the week prior to Thanksgiving. Since many Christmas songs are about the birth of Christ, they’re planting seeds of gospel truth and they don’t even realize it.

Because Christmas is a holiday celebrated globally, we can rejoice that the message of Christ and Christmas is being broadcast throughout the world via both secular and Christian radio stations. TWR utilizes more than 2,000 outlets worldwide and airs special Christmas messages in more than 200 languages; and Project Hannah’s Women of Hope program is now in 58 languages.

Our calling is to air the gospel message, yet our “free” air time is not free. The average cost of a medium wave 30-minute broadcast is from $200 to $1,000, depending on the power of the transmitter. The average charge for a 30-minute short wave program is from $130 to $200. We’re grateful for all of you who help make it possible for TWR and your local Christian stations to announce the Christ of Christmas 24/7.

“The giving of gifts is a marvelous response to the receiving of such a gift,” says Sproul. Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!
