More Important Than Food

Storly and Kate Michel with daughters, Esther and Hannah
“January 13. The day after the earthquake [in Haiti]…a lady realized her radio wasn’t working. She needed to buy a new one. She didn’t have enough food for the day, but she chose to go without food and instead bought a radio to listen to 4VEH. Radio…is more important than food,” explained Radio Station 4VEH Marketing & Communications Director Kate Michel.
TWR’s Haitian-born, Creole-language Thru the Bible Producer Storly Michel and his wife, Kate, spoke to the TWR staff here in the Cary, North Carolina office this morning. They have two daughters, Hannah and Esther. Storly recently returned from a visit to Haiti and updated us on the situation there.
“The only thing greater that the suffering of my people is the outpouring of love,” Storly told us through video. Destruction, loss, fear and despair prevail. This poignant story was shared:
A mother’s pain…but which is more broken?
The collapsed school or the broken mother?
But the mother said, “I love my God.”
“I know He loves me and does what is best for my family.
My daughter is now with Him.”
Haiti reacts. They are crying; they are mourning, but they are praising God. Storly described the sights and sounds of a broken nation. He walked among the tent communities speaking compassionately to his people. He said, “The problem is not what happened, but what will happen long-term?” He emphasized the value of radio for ongoing ministry to Haiti.
TWR partners with 4VEH (http://www.radio4veh.org/), which has been broadcasting to northern Haiti since 1950. Many of those affected by the earthquake have fled to the north. Radio station 4VEH has been distributing solar-powered fix-tuned radios as resources allow.
