Oasis of Hope

The Need

Although the home of the early church, today only 4.5 percent of the Middle East's 360 million people are affiliated with Christianity. Missionary radio represents one of the few ways to reach speakers of Egyptian Arabic, by far the most familiar dialect in the region.

Within this language group are women, youth and illiterates-those with the least access to the gospel. Even if one could make available millions of Bibles free of charge, millions could not use them for the simple reason that they cannot read. Christian radio translates the written Word of God into audio voice, making the hearing of the gospel possible. Reaching these segments in Egyptian society with the gospel by means of radio is therefore imperative.

The Vision

International Christian broadcasters Trans World Radio and Back to the Bible formed a strategic alliance to produce, broadcast and follow up four strategic programs in the Egyptian Arabic language. These four programs are called Oasis of Hope broadcasts. Reaching Egypt's largely unevangelized population of women, youth and nonliterates has been the main focus of the Oasis of Hope programs, which began airing in 1998. The first three programs to go on the air in 1998 were Healing Touches, (for Arabic-speaking women), I Long for You (for a non-literate audience) and Street Talks (drama program for youth). Beginning in January 2002, TWR added another program, this one specifically for men titled The Way Companion. These 15-minute broadcasts are filling a great need in reaching those with little or no access to the gospel.

The Ministry

Since 1974, TWR has been broadcasting to the Middle East. Strong signals from two stations reach the Arabic-speaking countries of the Middle East and North Africa with 25 hours of programming every week.

The Opportunity

To ensure the continuance of the four Oasis of Hope broadcasts, Trans World Radio must raise $86,261 annually to cover its costs for airtime, production and follow-up for five weekly airings. Trans World Radio asks that you prayerfully consider how God might use you to help us meet this important need.
