Ministry Projects Purpose: Evangelism and Discipleship Russian Broadcasts from Estonia

The strategic AM transmitter in Tartu, Estonia is reaching a potential audience of 159 million after the upgrade from 100 to 200 kilowatts in May 2010. From this improved transmitter, a strong signal now penetrates places like Moscow, Kiev, St. Petersburg and Minsk with the light of the gospel.

TWR Russia produces a two-hour block of radio programs which is aired daily in the evenings with a repeat in the morning. There are also live transmissions, one hour each and three times a week, in which listeners interact with the producers through phone calls or e-mail.

Programs being transmitted from Estonia include:

Health Programs: Approximately 120,000 Russian citizens die from drug and alcohol abuse each year. Drugs and alcohol already begin to spoil young lives at 11–14 years of age. The number of schoolchildren using drugs or alcohol has grown from 13 percent to 56 percent over the last 10 years. There is currently one health program called In-Dependence which is a joint project of a Christian church in St. Petersburg and TWR Russia. Margin Groups: The religious choices of many Russian people leave them searching for meaning in “broken cisterns that hold no water.” The program Shield of Faith shows listeners the “leaks” caused by different cults, while also pointing toward the glory of the one and only God. 

Family Programs: The family as we know it is falling apart in Russia. Eighty percent of marriages end in divorce! People are asking questions about healthy family relationships between husbands and wives, parents and children, grandparents and grandchildren. TWR aims to offer answers to these questions from a biblical perspective, to help improve family life in Russia, but most important, to point people to Jesus and build them up in their Christian faith.

Christian Life Programs: Many people in Russia do not know their goal in life, how to become happy, how to keep friendships, or how to gain love. People without God have neither a foundation to build upon nor an assurance of going through life’s difficulties and remaining whole and undestroyed. TWR Russia offers programs about Christian life issues. The programs endeavor to raise awareness about particular issues relevant to the Christian faith and bring encouragement to suffering Christians through testimonies.

Pastoral Programs: People coming to new faith in Jesus need deeper grounding in their faith and somebody to answer their questions. One of the programs TWR Russia produces is a live show, where different local pastors come into the studio for discussions on subjects that concern listeners, and issues that are raised in their congregations by newcomers. People at times call in to the program with questions they would not ask their own pastor. The issue of counseling is very touchy in a country where people have been preconditioned to think alike. Pastoral programming, with sensitivity and mercy toward the listener, are very important in a country like Russia.

Children and Youth Programs: Ten to 15 percent of Russia’s population is under 15 years of age. This gives us a great audience of young listeners. We live in a time when cruelty, abuse and crime on television flood people’s minds. It is a time when we have to be more diligent than ever about raising our children in this “crooked and perverse generation.” We say quite easily that children are our future; this future will depend on how our nation's children turn out. Will they be kind and merciful, or cruel and mean? Will they walk the way of righteousness, or find pleasure in planning evil? More and more children grow up not knowing God, not knowing His Word.  TWR Russia acknowledges this need and engages in producing different children’s programs.
