Ministry Projects Purpose: Evangelism and Discipleship Reaching the Berbers of North Africa

TWR’s Berber ministry broadcasts Christian programs for North Africa using major Berber languages (Kabyle, Tamazight and Tarifit) to specifically reach listeners in their heart languages. There are approximately 300 dialects of the Berber language, and some are specific even to a single tribe. The written form is slowly regaining more recognition but many Berbers are illiterate. Berbers express their thoughts, ideas and feelings through the spoken word. Found in many rural areas of North Africa, these oral communities can be reached effectively with the gospel by radio.
Young People in North Africa and the Middle East rarely have the opportunity to have their thoughts and feelings heard or to have someone guide them in the journey of life. Radio will reach these young adults adressing different subjects important to them.
The Imazighen Berbers are a people group who live in the mountainous and desert regions of central Morocco. the believers among the Imazighen Berbers are estimated only 100. Radio is the only way to reach isolated Berber villages in the Middle Atlas mountains with the Good News. Each audience has it's special characteristics and needs, which also correspond with TWR's Global Strategic Plan.
Family Issues is aimed at tackling the most frequently occurring social problems in this region, especially for those who have made a decision for Christ. These people often find themselves confronted by marital and education problems and difficult issues in raising children, because everyone else around them follows another religion. The producers befriend and encourage listeners via the programs and correspondence.
Light of Life aims to reach the Riffi Berber group. They speak the Berber Tarifit dialect and learn through hearing, not reading. This radio program not only brings the light of Jesus Christ to unsaved Berbers but also helps those who already know Christ to grow and be encouraged.
Bible Reading reaches oral communities that speak the Berber Tamazight dialect. It is a chronological storytelling program, beginning with stories from the Old Testament. Although oral learners do not learn through text, they can remember a great number of tales, parables and illustrations. Among a people who carry stories in their hearts, radio is the answer to bring them the greatest story ever told: the story of Jesus. (Statistics from: www.joshuaproject.org)
New Hope is a program for Berber Kabyle young adults in Algeria between the ages of 18 to 25. It is touching the hearts of Berber Kabyle young adults by showing them love, giving spiritual guidance and providing a lighthouse of hope as churches around them may be forced to shut down.
Way of Light is a radio program for the Imazighen Christians and seekers. It helps to reach and teach these isolated Berber people in Tamazight, their heart language. The programs are designed to get to know God and to grow in their daily walk wirth him. Through this program and in collaboration with local Christians, Tamazight-speaking churches will be birthed in this physically and spiritually dry region.
Only with your help can TWR continue to broadcast these vital programs to the Berber people. Please prayerfully consider how God could use you and your resources in His Kingdom today. A gift of $50 or more would make a lasting difference in the lives of Berber people in North Africa.
