Ministry Projects : Slovakia Roma Programming

“They are cheerful, lazy, and filthy,” replies a man on the street when asked what he thinks of the Roma people in Slovakia. His opinion is not unusual. A lady in her mid-40s is asked about the Roma and suggests that building a high fence around them is the optimal solution. The Roma (historically mislabeled "gypsies") are the most despised ethnic group in Central and Eastern Europe.

TWR-Slovakia would like to produce Roma radio programs in their heart language, starting in fall 2009. In order to reach the Roma people in Slovakia with the gospel, a 15-minute program will be broadcast weekly on an FM station in a large city in eastern Slovakia. This area comprises the largest concentration of Roma people in the country.

In preparation for this initiative, the outreach includes the costs of translation into the local Roma language, set-up of the production studio, location of a narrator for the Roma programs, purchase of 5,000 fix-tuned solar radios to be handed out in Roma communities and the purchase of airtime from the local FM station. In other countries with Roma broadcasting, when solar radios have been handed out, small churches are formed. This becomes the community center where people gather, often to hear Jesus' words of unconditional love through TWR programming.

TWR's Slovak partner actively fundraises for their work but needs financial help to begin this new initiative to their Roma citizens. You can cover the cost of the production and airtime for one minute of this program for just $7 ($105 covers the entire 15-broadcast) and make an eternal difference in the lives of many who need to hear of Jesus' love for them.
