Ministry Projects : Cambodian Church Leadership Training Project

Because of rapid church growth in Cambodia, it is common for church leaders to oversee more than one congregation. It is also common for many Cambodians to come into leadership positions without being solidly grounded – they become leaders because they were one of the first believers in the area, or because they are willing to lead.

The need to provide leadership training to Cambodian church leaders became our ministry goal after Antioch Research Group in Cambodia released the "Portrait of the Body of Christ in Cambodia" study in 2008. The study revealed:

• Most Cambodian church leaders have to work outside the church to support themselves. Most are rice farmers, perhaps the most traditional and common occupation in Cambodia.

• Nearly half of these leaders have only a primary level education, and less than 10 percent have a secondary level toward a High School diploma.

• Twelve percent of church leaders have read the entire Bible, while two percent of leaders have not read the Bible at all. Twenty-one percent have only read some of the New Testament, and roughly seven percent have read the entire New Testament, but only parts of the Old Testament. The largest grouping consists of 56 percent of church leaders who have ready only parts of both the Old and New Testaments.

While there are many denominational and para-church organizations conducting training in Phnom Penh, the majority of the leaders in rural Cambodia seldom receive any training. Through this project, TWR seeks to specifically address this need of rural church leaders.

Your gift will help provide training and learning resources for church leaders in Cambodia, establishing solid teaching for Cambodia's next generation of believers. Thank you for your willingess to come alongside us in this vital endeavor.
