Trans World Radio

Maintenance Tradesmen (Guam)

Overall, Radio Station KTWR on Guam is a 17 acre facility in a tropical setting with two industrial-type buildings, ten 240 foot towers, two diesel generators, various small and large vehicles and heavy machines, and five large transmitters. Specifically, we have the usual array of carpentry, plumbing, masonry, electrical, roofing, grounds, vehicle care, and other facilities maintenance to perform such as would be found in a small industrial site. It would not be expected that any one person could perform all of these tasks equally well but would help out wherever possible. It is expected that proficiency in at least one of these skills would be present, however.

KTWR is currently being operated and maintained by a team of seven men full-time and other volunteers. All staff members work rotating shifts and participate in the radio operations of the transmitter shifts. No prior experience is required for the radio work, but there must be a willingness to be trained to operate the transmitters. Since we operate in a team setting, the following characteristics are needed:

  1. A servant heart submitted to Christ. We do what needs to be done, no matter what it is. We try to assign tasks as best fit the individual and his skills, but situations can require flexibility. Also, stable spiritual life and family life are necessary to grow in a missionary field setting.
  2. A willingness to try new things. Virtually all in the team have acquired new skills and experience as situations changed. It can be enjoyable, too!
  3. Self-starter. We don’t have the time for a lot of close supervision. We encourage initiative and a sense of “ownership.” Within overall guidelines, you help identify needy areas and you assemble the materials and people needed to accomplish the task. We work as unto the Lord, not as unto men. There is flexibility along side of responsibility.
  4. A willingness and ability to work safely and to protect the safety of others. By its nature, a large shortwave radio station contains potentially dangerous electrical equipment and heavy vehicles such as a backhoe tractor. Safety of the team will not be compromised. Safety procedures will be followed.
  5. Good health and a capability to work in a warm, humid environment. Guam is a tropical island surrounded by blue, 80 degree water. It is warm and humid all year round, with a rainy season June through December and a less-rainy (“dry”) season January through May. Though the air temperature rarely exceeds 88 degrees, the sun can be quite intense. (Sending your relatives beach pictures at Christmas can be a lot of fun, though!)
