Overview

A TWR Epic Story about Women - Project Hannah

“Albania is full of contrasts. Village families have a miserable life. Mothers have little food for their children. There is little or no opportunity for education,” says Enkelejda Kumaraku, director of Valet e Ungjillit (Gospel Waves), TWR’s Partner in Albania. “They live in very slum-like conditions, with no running water, no reliable electricity, no new clothes, and no accessible health centers. Mothers give birth to their babies at home and some die just because of lack of simple hygiene.

“Most women living in the big cities, such as the capital Tirana and Durres, are well educated and have a life like women in other European cities. Although they may have a good job and a better life compared with their sisters in the villages, they also suffer discrimination, psychological, physical and sexual abuses from their fathers, boyfriends, husbands or employers, as women have few rights.”

For Shqiponia, a wife, mother, and storeowner living in Tirana, everyday life in Albania brings her many challenges and difficulties. Yet by listening to the radio programs of TWR’s Project Hannah, she finds encouragement and inspiration. She even buys and distributes small radios to women who visit her store so they can also be encouraged. By being involved in ministries such as the Project Hannah Prayer Calendar, she has a new perspective on women around the world and considers it a privilege to pray for them all.

Project Hannah’s Women of Hope program offers unconditional love, acceptance, and hope through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Only through God’s power can the women of Albania leave their burdens behind and experience a new freedom in Jesus. “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly” (John 10:10)”

Through Valet e Ungjillit, Project Hannah is already making a lasting impact on the women of Albania. Still, many women continue to search for the love and hope that can only be attained through a relationship with Jesus Christ. Will you help them find it?

Listener Stories

“I’m facing a hard time in my life, and these programs were like fresh water to me. I have been suffering so much from a wrong image of God, but now I know He loves me and he has a life with joy for me. This program has opened my eyes in many things. In each program it was not the speaker but God himself speaking to me.”
“This program made a revolution in my life, so I want to listen to it every moment of the day. I listen to the broadcasting and the rebroadcasting. Can I have copies of the program on tapes, or CDs? Believe this is so important to me, because it is my everyday food.”
“Before, we were gathering with friends in our church to speak about different things. Now our only one discussion is the Bible study on the radio, verse by verse through the Bible. It is the first time in my life I’m hearing such a program. I’m every day refreshed and full of energy, because I hear this program.”

Study Questions

  1. Shiponia (the woman in this segment) starts off by saying how difficult life in Albania is, both for her and all women.  Yet she can say that she is blessed despite these difficulties.  Do we have that kind of vision, to see the blessings in spite of difficulty?
  2. The Project Hannah prayer calendar is a source of encouragement to the people in Albania because it reminds them that they are part of the body of Christ.  How often do we see prayer as not just “talking to God” but as a unifying force within the Church?  Would we pray more if we remembered that our prayers encourage our brothers and sisters in Christ?
  3. Shiponia continues her work as a shop owner despite the hard times.  In addition, she purchases and distributes radios among the women she knows.  The non-Christians around her say that she is crazy because of this.  Do you have the kind of faith to bring the word of God to those around you even if it means spending money when you don’t have a lot to begin with?
  4. Project Hannah reaches women around the world, providing them with encouragement and lessons of both earthly and spiritual matters.  How can you reach people in your world, even if it’s not in an overly spiritual manner?
