Overview
As part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), the Ukraine endured nearly 70 years of Communist rule. In the 1930s, Stalin’s harsh program of agricultural collectivism brought famine and death to millions of Ukrainians. Even after the fall of the Communism, corruption and economic downfall haunted the newly independent Ukraine.
In the 2004 presidential election, corruption flared again and protestors took to the streets, demanding a new vote. This ‘Orange Revolution’ resulted in a new optimism that has since faded for many Ukrainians. Even newly elected President Yushchenko has faced allegations of corruption, and the Ukraine’s recent economic growth has slowed. Will President Yushchenko soon be added to the country’s long list of distrusted leaders?
Taking a lesson from the past, TWR sees the need for developing leaders of honesty and integrity in churches in the Ukraine, as well as in other post-Communistic societies. Olexander Chmut is now the Director of Trans World Radio Ukraine, but his path to that position contains a family line connecting four generations that weave in and out of a Communistic society. His desire is to use his legacy to impact the future through TWR and his own children, for the sake of the Gospel.
Trans World Radio’s history is a very rich legacy, having communicated the Gospel around the world for many years. Now, the older generations of TWR listeners are passing the wisdom of the programming down through their family lineage. TWR wants to train leaders in countries such as the Ukraine to do likewise in their own families and churches. Discipleship and leadership development radio programs would make this wish a reality.
In addition to problems of corruption, post-Communistic societies also face the issues of drug and alcohol abuse and the HIV/AIDS epidemic. An increase in intravenous drug use in particular has led to an alarming rise in HIV/AIDS infections. TWR would like to produce drug/alcohol prevention radio programming in both the Russian and Ukrainian languages. Other possible projects include children’s programming and the Women of Hope program in the Ukrainian language.
Imagine…raising up Christian leaders of integrity…providing hope for the next generation…allowing those in need to hear of God’s love. What a difference YOU could make!
Listener Stories
“…Your programs are absolutely wonderful. They help me to make sense of my life, make right choices in life, set important goals and think about eternity. I would wish that many other people would learn about your programs…”
“…Thank you for your programs and for the TWR magazine. I thought a lot about you and how important your ministry is. Once I talked to a woman who does not know God. I testified to her about Jesus Christ. She likes it a lot, when somebody tells her about God. She said that she could listen to the Word of God the whole day. So I told her about your ministry, and the time of your programs. She was very happy, and promised to listen to TWR…”
“Thanks you so much for taking such good care of me. I am so happy for the warm fellowship that we have with each other. We do not know each other, but the blood of Christ has brought us together. I am grateful for the programs of TWR. They comfort, instruct and help me move on forward…”
“I am listening to your programs and take from them for myself something that is valuable and important. The subjects in the programs are connected with everyday life, and there are many testimonies. Many times I was reprimanded and admonished. They strengthen my faith, give hope and strength… This short time of transmission is more important to me than the rest of the day…”
Study Questions
- The Communists wanted radios in every household for their propaganda, yet God used those radios to bring many to Him. So often God uses for His glory the very things designed to bring glory to others. In what way has God used something in your life for His glory?
- Olexander's father had poor eyesight and little education, yet he recorded TWR's radio programs, listened to them over and over, and then gave them to others to do the same. What obstacles did you overcome to learn more about Christ? What can you do to help others rise above the obstacles to the Gospel in their lives?
- Ten percent of all donations given to TWR Ukraine go to that ministry's work of reaching countries closed to the Gospel. Once receivers of the Gospel, now they are senders. In what way have you seen this pattern worked out in your life or the lives around you?
- Many ministries around the world depend on Western funds. How do you feel about this? TWR has begun coaching their dependent ministries to be financially self-sufficient. Can new ministries be compared to youth, and if so, when do you feel that youth/ministries should begin being coached towards financial self-sufficiency? Should youth be financially stable before they begin giving to Kingdom ministry?
- Olexander's grandmother didn't know that her grandson would be the one to use those Communist cable radios to preach the Gospel. But she raised her son, who in turn raised Olexander, to be a godly man. What kind of legacy will you leave for the future? What can you do today to serve others in the future?
