Searching for an Oasis of Peace

Peace—a word constantly in the media—eludes countless people today, especially those living in the most war-torn areas of the Middle East. Many seek it, especially young people who have their futures marred by the constant barrage of assaults on their families and neighborhoods. But what they need most is peace that will calm their hearts.

Such peace is sought by this young person, who wrote in response to Trans World Radio’s “Oasis of Hope” drama broadcast for youth, Street Talk: “I would like to thank you for your consideration and love. I am grateful to you for the booklet that you have sent to me as you have sent it at the appropriate time. I suffered from the tangles of repeated sin for a long time before accepting the Lord as my personal Savior. Therefore, I ask you to pray for my sake, asking Him to set me free from this sin. Please ask the Lord to purify my mind and provide me with peace.”

TWR and Back to the Bible have partnered together in the “Oasis of Hope” initiative for the Middle East since 1998. Missionary radio represents one of the few ways to reach speakers of Egyptian Arabic, by far the most familiar dialect in the region. The formation of this strategic alliance between TWR and Back to the Bible made it possible to produce, broadcast and follow up strategic programs in the Egyptian Arabic dialect specifically targeted to women, youth, illiterates and men in Egypt. The “Oasis of Hope” broadcasts include four programs: Healing Touches (for women), I Long For You (for nonreaders), Street Talk (for youth) and The Way Companion (for men).

Listeners Respond
“The impulse that urged me to write to you once more is the feeling that you are my friend in my loneliness and pains, especially after receiving your consoling letter. Please pray earnestly for my sake. I ask you also to send me a book to help me to overcome loneliness. Please keep on corresponding with me [so that] I feel that there is someone who cares for me. I also need to feel the presence of God in my life.” –A woman who listens to Healing Touches

“I lived a sinful past. I was in sin before knowing the Lord Jesus. I was misbehaving to the extent that I had stained my thoughts. How should I be set free from fear, shame and anxiety that is due to my past? I ask you in the name of Jesus to pray for my sake in a powerful way. May the Lord bless you and minister to you powerfully more than ever before.” –A listener to I Long For You

The Way Companion program is really a unique one as it discusses the problems of youth, trying to find solutions for them. As long as I listen to the program, I am attached to the Word of God.” –A man who listens to The Way Companion
