Young adults in Cambodia face many of the same struggles youth face around the world: peer pressure, family problems and school concerns. But added to these are the difficulties of life in Cambodia where poverty is high, education is hard to obtain and families have been shattered by the brutal Pol Pot regime in the late 1970s, when more than 1.5 million Cambodians died.
These youth need peace, security and wisdom, as well as someone to talk to who cares about their personal struggles. Cambodia’s young people need good advice, but more important, they need Jesus. That’s why TWR-Cambodia created It’s Yours, a 30-minute radio program designed to provide the country’s young adults with godly counsel and dramatized life situations that demonstrate good ways to deal with daily issues. In addition to the broadcast, TWR workers personally correspond with listeners. Rallies held in cities throughout Cambodia feature music, skits, choreographed dances and a chance to meet the program hosts of It’s Yours. Already, TWR-Cambodia is seeing results from the program, like these two young people who wrote in to the program.
“In the past, I’ve faced many problems in my life. My family was very poor and the money I earned was not enough to support my family and my university fees,” wrote one Cambodian young adult. “Sometimes I would get stressed with nobody to help or encourage me. But after I listened to It’s Yours, I feel that I have a good adviser. I can tell you about my life and learn to control my emotions. Some real life examples in the program are the same as my situation. It’s Yours has helped me to have more confidence. One of the program directors even called to encourage me. It’s Yours is like a good friend to me, as it has helped me find solutions in my life. Thank you!”
Another teenage girl wrote: “I am a high school student and come from another religion. It’s Yours has helped me examine myself to see how I can change and improve. Your program has helped me to know myself better. It has built up my self-esteem and encouraged me to be more confident. I am excited to listen to your program again next week!”
For more than 30 years, TWR's programs have been airing across Asia into the homes of millions of families to introduce them to Christ. Today, TWR broadcasts in more than 80 Asian languages and dialects and partners with nine broadcasting organizations in the region. Eight regional partners produce TWR's programs, follow up with listeners and administer humanitarian aid.
