Once hailed as the “breadbasket” of southern Africa, Zimbabwe is in the midst of a severe humanitarian crisis. Severe drought and economic upheaval are plaguing the once successful nation. The Reuters Foundation reports that “around 4 million people—more than a third of the population—were receiving food aid at the start of 2008.”
With farming and agriculture crippled, so is the backbone of Zimbabwe's economy. The country’s current hard-currency shortage has led to hyperinflation and chronic shortages in fuel and consumer goods. These crises have been attributed mainly to the drought affecting the entire region, the HIV/AIDS epidemic and the government's current price controls and land reforms.
With this dire situation in mind, TWR-Africa is developing a new program to assist and encourage those in Zimbabwe who are affected by the economic situation. The Entrepreneur, a 30-minute weekly broadcast in Shona and African English, focuses on informing listeners who are struggling to make ends meet on how to start small faith-based businesses, even with few resources.
Topics on the programs include writing a business plan, finances, marketing, mentoring and managerial issues and entrepreneurial tips and links, among other features. The initial series of The Entrepreneur consists of 32 broadcasts that are scheduled to begin airing in June. These programs are a priority for TWR-Africa, given the current economic and political situation in the country.
